My g.g.g.grandfather Samuel Wyatt received the Republic of Texas land grant in 1844, not 1854.

The State of Texas retained ownership of all her public lands after the state was annexed by the United States. Texas continued to make state land grants to ranchers, farmers and for railroad right-of-way that would encourage growth and settlement in the undeveloped areas.
