Re: Battle of Massard Prairie, Arkansas

Randy,

I checked with other sources and at the Confederate Research Center at Hillsboro, Texas and found the following information. In November 1862, Lt. Col. Peter C.Hardeman was in command of 500 men from Brig.Gen.Henry H. Sibley's former Arizona Brigade at Columbus, Colorado County Texas. In January,1863, the regiment is ordered to Alleytown to disarm disloyal Germans and enforce the Draft and Conscript Act.

In February, 1863, Special Order #81 provided for the final organization of the 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment-Arizona Brigade and ten companies are to be raised in Colorado County. Sibley: "No more blood or treasure should be spent in the Arizona Territory"

In May 1863,the regiment was ordered to march to Fannin County Texas by companies and rendezvous at the Warren Supply Depot (Old Fort Warren). Lt. Col. Peter C.Hardeman was promoted to colonel and placed in command of the regiment. The 1st Texas Cavalry arrived at Fort Warren where recruits from the local milita companies are enlisted. At this time my great grandfather Joshua D.Coffee enlists in Capt. John Henry Damron's Company (Co.C).
Brig. Gen. Smith P.Bankhead ordered Capt. Henry Fossett to send one of his two 80 man companies of the Frontier Regiment stationed at Camp Colorado in Coleman County to the Warren Supply Depot in Fannin County to reinforce the 1st Texas Cavalry. Capt. Fossett appealed the order to the Frontier Regental Headquarters at Gatesville Texas and his two 80 man companies remained at Camp Colorado. In his appeal,Capt. Fossett stated if he moved a company to Fannin County, the Texas frontier south of Camp Collier in Brown County would be virtually unprotected against Indian attacks. In July 1863, Capt.Damron's Company is ordered to Boggy Depot, I.T. and a 25 man detachment of his company under Lt.A.C.Kerr is posted at Colbert's Ferry for picket duty.

In March 1864, excpt for the pickets at Colbert's Ferry, the 1st Texas Cavalry is ordered to Arkansas, via Gen. William Steele's headquarters at Boggy Depot,I.T. Gen. Steele is sent to Galveston to take command of coastal artillery and the 1st Texas Cavalry is assigned to Col. Richard M. Gano's Brigade, Gen. Samuel B.Maxey's Cavalry Division, District of Arkansas and Indian Territory, Trans-Mississippi Department. Gano's Brigade is then moved to Arkansas.

The 1st Texas Cavalry was placed in Gano's Brigade which was sometimes called a Squadron, Battalion or Regiment with no change in strength. Gano's Brigade was in action in Arkansas at Camden and Poison Springs, where Major Michael Looscan was placed in command of the regiment. A detachment under Maj. Looscan saw action at Massard's Prairie while the remainder of Col. Gano's Brigade set up an ambush on the Fort Smith-Fort Towson Road with orders to attack Federals in pursuit of Confederates retreating from the engagement after their ammmunition was exhausted.
