Re: Battle of Massard Prairie, Arkansas

Jerry,
My interest is in the January-March '63 period when they were suppressing the draft resistance primarily in Fayette, Austin and Colorado counties. There is a fair amount of correspondence in the OR Series 21 [CD] pages 850-950. Magruder proclaimed Martial Law in those counties in early January, and Hardeman was ordered to enforce it.

In an interesting letter from W.G. Webb to E.P. Turner on January 21, he says

"Colonel Hardeman's command are the most disorderly, outrageous set of men I ever knew. Their officers have no control over them. They are guilty of all kinds of excesses. The planters and inhabitants generally complain to me that they nearly strip them of everything they can lay hands on, and kill their beeves and hogs and steal their poultry. I have this day issued a special order, and directed it to be read at dress parade this evening. I have talked to the officers, and they acknowledge they cannot restrain these men. " AR 21 p956

I have a piece written on Magruder and his conflict with the Texas Supreme Court. The problem is that it is too long for an article and too short for a book, so if I can find more stuff, its easier to add than edit. There is probably more to dig out.
