Sgt. David Crockett and Sam Houston were at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and were in General John Coffee's Tennessee Regiment of Mounted Gunners.
Gen. Sam Houston, the Father of Texas, remembered what Gen. Coffee tactics were used at the battle of Horseshoe Bend against the William Weatherford's Red Stick Creek Indians. In 1836, Gen.Houston used the same tactics at the Battle of San Jacinto against General Santa Anna and his Mexican army. After the battle, Gen. Coffee said "The Indians fought bravely to the last man" but Sgt. David Crockett later said, "We shot them like dogs."
Another similarity in the two battles was that Bill Weatherford and Gen. Santa Anna were not killed or wounded.
There is a monument in Charleston SC to a man named Westbrook who was hanged for treason by British Col. Banestre Tarleton. I was told by a geneologist that Westbrook was also one of my g.g.g.g. grandfathers.
