Re: 1864 Battle of Adobe Walls, Turkey Track Ranch

Patti,

The first battle of Adobe Walls occurred on November 26, 1864. Col. Christopher "Kit" Carson and the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry regiment came upon a Kiowa village of 150 lodges in what is now Hutchinson County Texas. Col. Carson advanced past the village and forted up at Adobe Walls, which was the remains of William Bent's abandoned fort. Unknown to Carson when he forted up, there were as many as 7,000 Kiowa, Comanche and Cheyenne Indians camped within two miles of Adobe Walls. When Carson's scouts determined the strength of the Indians, Col. Carson and his regiment retired to New Mexico Territory in the face of overwhelming odds.

The second battle of Adobe Walls occurred on June 27, 1874. On this occasion, there were 28 buffalo hunters and one woman in a hunter's camp about a mile from the ruins of Adobe Walls. About 700 Quahadi (Antelope Band) Comanches under Chief Quannah Parker attacked the camp. The buffalo hunters retreated to Adobe Walls and forted up. That is where William "Billy" Dixon made his famous shot of nearly a mile with his 58 caliber Sharps buffalo gun and killed a Comanche headman who was on a ridge sitting on his horse.

Both battles of Adobe Walls were located on what later became the Turkey Track Ranch in Hutchinson County Texas which was later under management of Woodson Coffee, nephew of range boss, Thomas Logan "Tom" Coffee.
