In order to better understand John W. Marshall's Squad, I'm addressing J.D. McCamant's service before he was elected captain.

1) J.D. McCamant was a private in a Hunt Co TX militia
2) J.D. McCamant enlisted at Hubbard's Creek in a miliita, about 130 miles distant
3) J.D. McCamant promoted to quartermaster Sgt
4) J.D. McCamant on detachment to Montague TX
5) J.D. McCamant on detachment to Greenville TX

6) ... beginning of your description of J.D. McCamant's CSA service

7) J.D. McCamant as a Captain of Martin's 5th Partisan Rangers Company H presents a question: Did an inordiante numbe of men desert is company? ... OR ... Were his men were serving in the Collin County vicinity of when they saw the posters to sign up for the Confederate Brush Battalion? (This strongly implies that they were deserters.)

8) J.D. McCamant during the last year of the War, which is my balliwick. True, we need to know what the CSA records state, but my contribution is to try to connect the "after good records" fragments in an attempt to compile the history before and after the era of decent records.
