Thanks a heap. I have read one account of Chehaw Station that put the CS troop strength at 500. Some have made the claim that there were "500 UofA Cadets" at Chehaw. (Don’t think there were this many total). I think some of the confusion arises from the fact that "Lockhart's Battalion" (one Co called "Lockhart's Cadets") was also present. This battalion as discussed on this board previously was made up of 16 and 17 year olds. They latter were designated 1st Ala Reserve and still latter the 62nd Ala Inf. The Governor of Alabama credited them with saving Montgomery from Rousseau. Was Ready's Battalion a standing organization or was it temporary? Could it be the same as "Lockhart's Battalion”? If the estimate of 500 is correct and Lockhart's Battalion (8 Companies) was anywhere close to full strength there could not have been many more troops there.
