Thanks for all the help. I looked on my copies of H.T.'s Co B (don't know where I got Co D) 42nd Ala CSR and found the handwritten note. Of course H.T. and *Cole*/W.C. would not be on the 42nd's list of Vicksburg prisoners, because both were in Co H, 3rd Louisiana Inf at Vicksburg. My copy of W.C.'s CSR in 3rd LA states he enlisted at Camp Jackson, Ark, while H.T. enlisted in New Orleans. Both were granted transfer to Co B, 42nd Alabama Inf by special orders dated Feb 15, 1864. This is the last entry in W.C.'s record for 3rd LA, and likewise for H.T. There is, of course, no 42nd Ala record of W.C. As you said, H.T.'s record with the 42nd seems to center on hospital service, the first entry (after clothing issue in June 1864) is in October 1864 when he was admitted to Ross Hospital in Mobile for febris remittens, and was sent to the general hospital December 5, 1864. He is at the General Hospital, Thomasville, NC, when paroled under the Johnston-Sherman convention April 26, 1865. I am impressed that he was a patient for this period, but it is possible that after recovery from the fever he was not capable to return to active field duty, and remained as a convolescent attendant.

There was a George Washington Horton, son of Hollis' aunt Elizabeth Marcia Horton and John Madision Henry, a Baptist preacher in Pleasant Ridge (the explaination of this is not offered as too lengthy and a very touchy subject in Horton circles in Mississippi). G.W. was b 1832 in Greene County, John and Elizabeth were married in July 1840, then immediately moved to Leake County, Miss. There G.W. enlisted in Co B, 40th Miss Inf., on April 19, 1862. I thought he might have transfered to the 42nd Ala as well, and I have heard family legends to this effect, but he was present with the 40th Miss on a roll dated April 1, 1865, as well as throughout 1864. So this is probably not the G.W. in Co B, 42nd Ala.
