From one of my book drafts, re. service of the 8th Conf. under Forrest:

"The [8th Conf. Cav.] regiment was split into two groups in 1864. Part was transferred to General Nathan Bedford Forrest, operating under the regiments commander, Colonel Wade, and the other part remained under General Wheeler." [...]
"Part of the 8th surrendered at Greensboro, N.C., with less than 100 remaining members, on May 17, 1865. There were more than this number still part of the regiment at the surrender, however, most had disbursed to their homes, as the negotiations for the surrender took two weeks. Even General Wheeler had left. Captain [George Knox] Miller estimates the losses of the regiment at a conservative fifty percent, based on his own company’s losses. Company D was among those paroled in N.C., however, records indicate that Co. D was paroled at Hillsboro, not Greensboro, between 4/26/1865 and 5/3/1865. Companies F, G, and H are not found on the list of parolees in N.C., lending support to the theory that these companies were under Gen. Forrest."
