A consolidation of the 42nd Ala into the 37th Ala Consolidated on April 9, 1865 would mean that H.T. had been in the hospital for nearly a month or more when paroled. The family maintains that H.T. was wounded at the battle of Bentonville March 19-21, which may well be the case. The 42nd Alabama would have been engaged at that battle as such, and not in the consolided organization. What "general hospital" would H.T. have been sent from Ross Hospital in Mobile? Can we assume that he recovered there, and rejoined the 42nd in time to be wounded at Bentonville, or might he have remained in Thomasville General Hospital from Dec 1864?

The family lore also includes that H.T. was wounded at Corinth (while he was with the 3rd La Inf). I'll have to check the 3rd La CSR I have for him to verify if there is evidence for that. The tale continues that H.T., after the surrender of Vicksburg, jined up with Forrest's Cavalry, and was again wounded. No evidence for such service nor for care of any such wound is to be found, and the fact that he transferred to the 42nd Ala directly from the 3rd La on February 15, 1864, would argue against such cavalry service. The family may have attributed H.T.'s Buntin friends/
in-laws' service in the 8th Confederate Cav to Hollis. I have often wondered if ANY CSA cavalry service in the west might be represented as "fighting in Forrest's cavalry" in postbellum recollections/family traditions.

It gets even deeper. Supposedly after his parole at the NC hospital, H.T. fell down the steps of that place, tearing the adhesion/"stricture" in his leg from the wound which incapacitated him, thus he was enabled to walk home from NC!! I have all this from a type-written letter from one of H.T.'s grandchildren to another. This may have prompted the 1937 enquiry into H.T.'s records.
