Hi Karon:

Most of the Compiled Military Service Records have gaps in them. But the CMSR will likely show a "paper trail" to Fort Delaware and nothing beyond for Augustus L. NUNN. That will confirm that he died there and should give the date of his death. The only thing that puzzles me is Gary's comment about the Chimborazo military hospital admission record under the name Augustus L. NUNN.

The CMSR rarely gives you any clue as to family connections. You might be lucky enough to find an enlistment paper in these files. Those who "volunteered" in 1862 in response to the April 1862 Confederate Conscription Act were paid a $50 bounty. If an enlistment paper for this period is found it will tell you the man's age, his county of birth, occupation, and place of enrollment. It will contain his signature in two places: once acknowledging that his act was voluntary and again acknowledging receipt of his $50 bonus.

You need to know which communities and/or counties Company E, 34th Georgia Infantry was recruited from. The folks here on the Georgia CWMB probably have already helped you with that. If that information matches where your family member Augustus L. NUNN was living at the beginning of the war [the 1860 Federal census], then you have can have considerable confidence that this record belongs to your ancestor. Unless he fathered children after his death, and then you have to start over!

Keep in mind that a gift to us genealogists is the practice of early war Confederate volunteers (Union too) of enrolling to serve with family, friends, and neighbors. If you find a cluster of family members serving in the same company, you are home free!

I'm surprised that Jeff's e-mail had not reached you as of your 2:05 pm posting. He had already sent it off this morning when I spoke with him around 9 am. Oh, well, technology is still a wonderful tool. If you don't receive it within 24 hours, I can send you a copy.

Let us know if there is anything we can do to help further with your research!
