I have no proof... but I think you are on to something with the adopted child or children thing. It seems that the Nunn men like the Anthony men were all killed save one or two here and there.

What does a family with no adult males do with the children?
I am sure that a hard life also killed many of the women so that would leave the aunts grandparents etc. to do for these poor kids.
