Re: 34th Ga Inf
In Response To: Re: 34th Ga Inf ()

My direct ancestor, Pleasant Woodard Hyatt, Co. K, 34th Ga. Vol. Inf., was captured on May 17, 1863, and sent to Camp Morton, Ind.

We have always wondered why he was shown as captured on the day after the battle. Were the the captured prisoners just recorded a day late? Is it possible that he was separated from his unit and was trying to get back when he got caught?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Also, if there are any descendants of members of the 34th who were sent to Camp Morton, I would appreciate information on that camp. I know that it was condemned by the Federal Inspector of Prisons. My great great grandfather contracted typhoid fever and was dead in about a month.
