Kip Lindberg wrote an article entitled "Better Off in Hell: The Evolution of the Kansas Redlegs," in "North & South" magazine, vol. 5, #4, as he mentioned in this forum on 19 March 2006, and it would have detailed references (that periodical's policy). Sadly, I haven't been able to obtain a copy. If anyone would be so kind as to photocopy this article and either attach it as an email to me or snail mail it I would be very grateful.

E. D., please be kind enough to cite which newspaper references you have that have details about Captain George H. Hoyt's thirty-or-so members of this very real paramilitary organization. Some of the rest of us would like to have this information, too. If you would also send me copies as attachments to my email address, I would be very pleased.

The most telling newspaper article I have so far is "Particulars of the Raid of the 'Red Legs'" in the St. Louis "Daily Missouri Republican" of 13 April 1863. This article is quoting the "Leavenworth Times" of 9 April 1863.

Another source is William E. Connelley's 1910 "Quantrill and the Border Wars" which discusses the Red Legs in detail in the long note on pages 412-416 which also names at least 24 of the specific members, including William Hickok.
