Jim Morris brought to my attention the website for the Missouri Secretary of State, featuring the index to the "Union Provost Marshal Papers, 1861-66."

JACKPOT!!!!

A quick search revealed the following interesting items:

NAME: Jones, Henry W.; Tufft, [Unknown]; Swain, [Unknown]; Boone, A. G. COUNTY: Jackson. CITY: Westport. SUBJECT: Affidavit of Henry Jones explaining the search of a store formerly occupied by Col. Boone. DATE: 07-26-1862. REEL NO.: F1586. [Here's your William Simpson Tough/Joseph Bloomington Swain connection.]

NAME: Swayne, J. B. COUNTY: Jackson. CITY: Westport. SUBJECT: Note from Maj. W. C. Ransom to Swayne and Albert Sams (?) that he has been directed by Gen. Blunt to arrest them for not reporting themselves. DATE: 04-07-1863. REEL NO.: F1272. [J. B. Swain and probably Albert E. Saviers.]

NAME: Hoyt, George H. COUNTY: Jackson. CITY: Kansas City. SUBJECT: Detective Hoyt resigned and is discharged. Signed by Lt. Col. R. J. Van Horn, 25th Mo. Vols. DATE: 09-15-1863. REEL NO.: F1344. [This is around the time Hoyt became Lieutenant colonel of the Fifteenth Kansas Cavalry. Charles R. Jennison was colonel.]

NAME: Swaney, [?]. COUNTY: Platte. CITY: Platte City. SUBJECT: Statement of Marie C. Vogdes that Swaney was heard saying thta Quantrill always got ahead of the Federals. If the Federals killed one of Quantrill's men, he would kill two of theirs. Conversation took place with Henry Basye at Weston, Mo. DATE: 09-15-1863. REEL NO.: F1272.

NAME: Swaney, John. COUNTY: Jackson. CITY: ----. SUBJECT: Statement of various women that they heard Swaney state that the treatment of Kansans during Quantrill's raid on Lawrence was no worse than the treatment Missourians had received at the hands of Jim Lane. Swaney states he condemned the raid of Lawrence. DATE: 09-17-1863. REEL NO.: F1272.

NAME: Bridges, J. L. COUNTY: Unknown. CITY: Leavenworth, Ks. SUBJECT: Receipt of $75 in full payment for a horse by William Logan of Wayne County, Missouri. DATE: 11-05-1863. REEL NO.: F1482. [Our old pal John Lyman Bridges.]

NAME: Hoyt, George. COUNTY: Unknown. CITY: Olathe, Ks. SUBJECT: Letter to Maj. Heath at Fort Leavenworth accompanying a statement of William Logan, mailed from Kansas City, Missouri. DATE: 08-15-1864 [1863?]. REEL NO. F1344.

NAME: Saviers, Albert E. COUNTY: St. Louis. CITY: St. Louis. SUBJECT: Will be released from prison because of special instructions from the President. DATE: 12-14-1864. REEL NO.: F1206.

NAME: Hickok, James B.; Ginhons, [Unknown]. COUNTY: Lawrence. CITY: ----. SUBJECT: Lt. S. A. Harshbarger inquiring whether Hickok and Ginhons are scouting the area under Brig. Sanborn's orders. Both men were acting suspicious and claimed to be heading to Fort Scott, Kansas. Mention of Hickok being in Cassville in November. DATE: 02-15-1865. REEL NO.: F1631.

NAME: Swain, [?]. COUNTY: Unknown. CITY: Leavenworth, Ks. SUBJECT: U. S. Military Telegram from Maj. J. N. McElroy stating that Swain has escaped. McElroy asks that detectives from St. Louis, Mo., be sent to help. He notes: "the red legs seem to expect him here. Kansas men cannot be trusted." DATE: 04-05-1865. REEL NO.: F1272. [Joseph Bloomington Swain--what a character!]

NAME: Swain, [?]. COUNTY: St. Louis. CITY: St. Louis. SUBJECT: Letter from H. W. Hathsing to Capt. Peter Tallon giving a physicial escription of Capt. Swain, whom he thinks is from Platte County, Mo., and formerly belonged to a band of Red Legs on the Kansas border. Swain is known as a desperado in the area. DATE: 04-11-1865. REEL NO.: F1272. [J. B. Swain was a slippery one, alright.]

These records also have numerous citiations for Charles R. Jennison, his brother Alonzo H. Jennison and a "Charles Jennison." Also Quantrill. Didn't have time to go through all of these yet.
