Re: MORE RED LEGS

Dear Jim,

I very much appreciate your bringing this to my attention. However, I am not sure that this is the George H. Hoyt of the "Red Legs." In September 1863, Hoyt was still Chief of Detectives for the district, directly employed by District Provost Marshal Preston B. Plumb.

By the way, what the heck is the Missouri "SOS"?

An interesting note about the "Red Legged Chieftain" George H. Hoyt. Before his early death in the 1870s, Hoyt served a term as Attorney General for the State of Kansas. Ironic, heh? He was also made a brevet brigadier general at the end of the war for his service with the Fifteenth Kansas Cavalry. The Fifteenth Kansas was raised specifically in response to Quantrill's raid on Lawrence.

Regards,
JAMES D. DREES
