Re: What was Lafayette fighting for?

Would you be in favor of a federal law that required all people in the United States to mandatorily attend Church every Sunday so that they can learn your Morality? We tryed that is some of our States before the Constitution. Hense, we have the 1st Amendment because of it.

While I have nothing against that. I don't think that I would like to live under such a system, nor will it do any good for men reject morality in their lives, or they would all attend church in the first place. You could not build enough churches to hold all the people if they all were moral.

Yes, We have laws against Murder. But, you will admit that our concepts of how we should punish murders has changed even in my short lifetime. The Electric chair, or a short rope, used to be the swift punishment for first degree murder. In the old days the life of the murder was forfieted as equal value of the life taken.

When is the last time you heard of the electric chair being used? We now are growing to consider such punishment as almost barbaric. In a few years we may well punish murders by putting them in a mental rehab facility and not even locking them up in jail.

All of this devalues the life of the person they murdered. It says that the value of the reclaimed murders life is more valuable that the life of the person killed.

So don't tell me these things don't change. They do.
