James - I have ancesters that spelled Holcomb(e) 15 different ways, father and sons spelled it different, brothers spelled it different. The scribes that recorded their enlistments often spell it different from what the enlistee spelled it. It is reported in genealogy books that 90% of all Holcombe's in the USA are related. Most fought for the CSA, but I also have relatives that moved from Virginia to southern Illinois that fought for the Union. You having a grandmother Holcombe most likely makes us very distant cousins
