George:
That is my James McCamish you found. He was the youngest son of Samuel by his first wife, Nancy Stuart. Wilson, my great grandfther was the first son by Mary Ann Hyden (1/2 Cherokee Indian.)He enlisted at Riceville (McMinn Co. TN) just across the Hiawasee River from Charlestown (Bradley Co. TN) where Samuel enlisted. According to my cousin, Carolyn Hylton, James "retired " from the Confederate Army after surrendering and traveled to McCamish, Kansas where his older brother, Richard and several other sibling had founded a town. {These brothers fought for the Union Army.} However, there is no evidence to support this legend. He may not have gotten that far. I have found no census records regarding him. Your suggestions regarding Samuel are good ones. I have spoken with Terry Winchell previously and sent him a copy of James' muster record as his name did not appear on the archives at Vicksburg. He was not sure what happened to the wounded shipped to Mobile. He did say if a soldier died en route he could not have been buried at sea as that was against the rules of engagement. I am not familiar with the Old Court House Museum, but will call them next week to see what they know. Do you have a contact there? Thank you so much. I will let you know what Jim Mitchell has found out about the coroner's report. He was meeting with the present county coroner of Bay Minette just after we spoke, so I'm eager to find out if he has anything new to add.
