What a wonderful story! You must have been so happy the day you found him on that list. How long had you been searching? Last night I spent time looking for Confederate soldiers buried in Mobile (Lauderdale Springs) and New Orleans. I found no one from the 43rd, but did find some good lists of soldiers at the Lauderdale Spring site. My heart started beating faster looking down the list....nothing for me.
I also found New Orleans ships passenger list 1853-1899: National Archives Microfilm T 527 that is supposed to list name, date of arrival, name of ship, and include the names of those who died on board. I'm going to order it tomorrow night at the FH Center in Brewster.I also found a book about three nurses who served the Union army at Vicksburg-really good. (I read it one line.) All three contracted malaria which infected many soldiers as well-a lifetime sentence. It was interesting to see their perspective. Meanwhile, I wait to hear from the folks at the Old Court House Museum....
