Re: Anyone with ancestors from 39th VA Calvary?

A Goggle Search "Scouts, Guides and Couriers" [in quotes] will bring up a wealth of information, four pages of hits including a complete roster of the four companies.

Here's some information I brought up browsing around including some from their Compiled Service Record files.

I have the impression that many of these young bucks came from fairly affluent families and well educated.

Two Interviews with Robert E. Lee

By W. W. Page, Reverend

Note: The following is taken from the November 1890 to April 1891 issue of the Illustrated Monthly Magazine (vol. 61; new ser. vol. 19, pp. 797Ó98). W. W. Page was in the Confederate service, serving as captain of Company D, 39th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry (ranking from 26 January 1864). His company of scouts was stationed at Camp Lee.

The last two years of the war I spent at General Lee’s headquarters as captain of a company of scouts, guides, and couriers in his body-guard, and in all that I had the privilege of seeing of him during those years the two things that impressed me most in this first interview—his high sense of honor, and his deep, though intelligent Christian sentiment—shone conspicuous.

Tribute of Respect.

Camp S. G. & C.,
Hdq'rs A. N. Va., Jan.6, 1864.

At a meeting of Capt. Piter's company of scouts, guides, and couriers, Lieut. Wm. N. Green was called to the chair and Corporal J. B. Lehew appointed Secretary. A committee was appointed to prepare a preamble and resolutions expressive of the sorrow and regret felt by the command at the untimely death of our lamented comrade, Corporal John W. Laws, who died, on the 5th inst., of typhoid fever, in hospital at Staunton, Va. The committee reported the following, which were unanimously adopted:

Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God to take from among us our esteemed friend and companion, Corporal John W. Laws, of Fauquier county, Va;

Resolved, That while we bow submissively to the will of Him who does no wrong, we nevertheless deeply feel the loss of one who, by his strict integrity, modest and genial manners, and undisguised conduct, had endeared himself to us all.

Resolved, That we fully sympathize with his bereaved family, although they have great consolation in the unassuming yet certain christianity of their deceased friend.

Resolved, That a copy of these proceedings be furnished the family of the deceased; that one copy also be filed with the company records, and that they receive one insertion in each of the following papers — the Richmond Christian Advocate, Richmond Daily Sentinel and Dispatch.

Committee — Capt A P Pifer, Serg Wm V Green, Lieut Geo R Balthrope.

Military Notices.

Special service.

Scouts, Guides, and Couriers.

I am authorized by the Secretary of War to raise six companies of Cavalry, for special service, as Scouts, Guides, and Couriers, to serve under Gen. Lee.

It is important to get this force into the field as speedily as possible, and I have opened muster rolls for the purpose of enlisting one or more companies in the city of Richmond and the counties adjacent.

All persons who are desirous of joining a select corps are solicited to come forward and enroll themselves at once, as it is quite probable that Congress may extend the Conscript law so as to embrace all persons to the age of 45.

This organization will afford an opportunity of volunteering in a select corps, instead of being liable to the Conscription law, without the choice of selecting the arm of service they prefer.

I will be found daily at the office of the Adjutant General of the State of Virginia, in the State Court-House, and will be pleased to give any information, or to enroll men.

J. H. Richardson.
[Major, 39th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry]
