Thank you for this note. I apologize but I should have mentioned that I found the Joseph G. Hays information too on the NPS website. Unfortunately my J. S. Hays probably had his papers filed under Joseph G. Hays' incorrectly. My J. S. (John Stover) Hays was born in 1832, not 1827 like Joseph G. Hays was.
Our John Stover Hays married Indiana Barton Carter and retired to Afton, Virginia where he was a postmaster. Interestingly enough, Joseph G. Hays was also made a postmaster in Marion, VA about the same time.
I think that the records of the two Hayses were combined at some point in the Civil War filings.
If you have any information on John Stover Hays I would be so grateful. And yes, I figured that he was "promoted" after the war to Captain. Seems like war stories were like fishing stories: "I once caught a fish thiiiiiis big!"
