Re: reburial of the Union soldiers after the Civil

My ancestor was discharged Jan. 1864 as ass't surg. of the 56th USCT. But he then was ordered to return to duty by Medical Director, Surg Wicks. He was assigned to Inland 63 & 66,and also took charge of a detachment of the Iowa 1st and the contraband camp.
The family bible states he died at Helena of small pox 26 April 1864..
I have searched high and low for his grave in Iowa. It is just not there in his home state.
His name was Henry I. Childs (sometimes J.).
Was he a military medical contractor or was he a civilian and where would he logically have been buried?
Any suggestions?
