Thank you Linda for being so logical, this makes sense to me. I have 6 pages of his military record. Nothing states anything about his death. There were no pension records in the folder. Mostly medical letters to and from the medical Director.
In his last letter to his wife he said he is on Island 63 below Helena, dated 4 Feb 1864. He died 26 April of 1864.
His son Thomas, was 1st LT in the same 56th USCT. Three days before Henry's death Thomas wrote his wife this:"Some one told the Capt. they saw Henry on the Memphis picket, but what his business was he could not say." 23 April 1864.
