I don't know anyone who can say what was in the minds of any one those men. So we all are speculating as to their motives, whether it was loyality or survival. Personally I find survival a much more compelling reason for one of my Great Uncles Alexander Watt to join the 4th Arkansas U.S. in Little Rock rather than the 5th Kansas or 1st Indiana Cavalry in Jefferson County where he lived.

To say that their motives was for loyality seem to me to be a thin veil for soothing our own consciences.
