Re: Pine Bluff Union Recruits
Mr. Knight -
Not "afraid" to identify myself, it's just not relevant. When I've contributed to the Civil War Message Boards I've tried to present documented facts; actually it's a rule. I thus confess I broke discipline when I made the original post; knew it was a mistake the instant I hit the send button. I'm a low-level historian, who uses these boards in my own research. I have no dog in this fight except fidelity to fact (not "truth") interpreting the facts I leave to those who have agendas. My concern is that there have been numerous very generalized assertions of brutality and intimidation perpetrated by the Fifth Kansas Cavalry (and Kansas cavalry generally in Arkansas) and the First Indiana Cavalry, i.e. Powell Clayton's command. I'd like to see compiled a list of offences committed by Clayton's cavalry, each specific documented by sources, so that all can read the charges. Think of it, if you like, as a bill of indictment for the war crimes Clayton and his men perpetrated. That would help my research, perhaps make a contribution to Arkansas history, and maybe elevate discussion above who we all are.
