No, that is one of the stories that is contributing to the "bunk". Co I 3rd Ark was not made up of 150 cadets of the AMI led by George Alexander. He was the Captain but the rolls did not have 150 young boys in it. Also, no infantry company being organized by a military school trained captain would even consider taking cannons with them as they KNEW that was not allowed. If you raised an infantry company for service then you had men with rifles...not cannons. THis is part of the problem with shoddy history. And it is a shame when institutions further the misconception and many times just flat out incorrect information that gets settled in the "real history" and muddles the whole story. Of course, it makes a great story...trying to match that of the cadets at VMI but in reality it never happened. While some of the local students did serve in Co I, it was mostly local men from Dallas County. Also, I take anything a modern newspaper says with very little credability when dealing with historical content unless I can see where it is backed up with primary sources. Way too many "history buffs" who heard it from someone who heard it from their grandpa" etc makes its way as "fact" in history when many times it is only a good story, embelished with time. Newspapers will print anything that makes a good story without any real effort at historical research. I believe my source for info was Jonathan K. Smith who wrote "Tulip Ridge" back in 1966 which is after the Ark Hist Qtrly article in 1955. Many of those articles have holes in them from the 50's due to limited information which is now more accessible. Way too many people just blindly take them as fact since it is in the AHQ. I too have been guilty of it in the past but learned to look at their sources as well.

Oh well, I am hoping someone will find something to prove me wrong so I can accept that story, but until they do, I stand by my research and "guns" on AMI and Co I 3rd Ark.
