Re: Arms for Gen Holmes command

Jim

Sorry for being so late in replying to your question, Have been busy with Vacation Bible School this last week.

You asked, "Can you point me to info regarding what was received from Pike?"

I can only answer that I have not seen any specific information on what Hindman was able to get from Pike's Command. I know that Pike disarmed the 19th (Dawson's) Arkansas Infantry before he allowed their transfer to Hindman's command. After the blow up between Pike and Hindman, a detail from the 19th/later 24th Arkansas Inf. were sent from Camp White Sulpur Springs in early August 1862 to Fort Washita, Indian territories, to bring back the artillery for Hart's Battery being re-organized at Sulphur Springs. As you know sorting out the formation 24th Arkansas from the 19th Arkansas is somewhat of a difficult question of timing. Also add to that the fact that a lot of Hart's Battery was formed out of transfers from the poorly formed 24th Arkansas Inf. which was actually made up of those who were sick in the hospital of the 19th Arkansas.

Anyway I do not believe that this particular detail to Fort Washita brought anything back to Arkansas more than what they could get for the Artillery. It wasn't until late August that the 19th and 24th Arkansas Inf. recieved any weapons as they were complaining of only having 20 shotguns and 100 rounds for each of those weapons for the entire 4,000 Arkansas troops at Sulphur Springs. This is about the time that Parson's Missouri Inf. brigade crossed back over the Mississippi bringing with it the supply train that I mentioned earlier. Col. Garlands 6th Texas Inf. had arrived at Sulphur Spring, well armed and trained.

As you know Hart's Battery was assigned to Col. Robt. R. Garland Texas brigade (6th Tex. Inf, 24th Tex, and 25th Tex. Cav. Dis) of infantry. And during the Battle of Arkansas Post, Hart's Battery was the only battery of Field Artillery not assigned to Fort Hindman itself according to Gen. Churchill's reported on the battle. Adm. David Porter reported 11 guns being captured inside the fort (including the 3 heavy guns from the CSS Ponchartrain) and 6 outside. So it would be reasonable here to conclude that Hart's Battery at the time of Arkansas Post consisted of 6 guns at that time.

In the Pike and Hindman fued correspondence in the O.R.'s a battery of (I believe) 10 Parrot guns were at Fort Washita being unused, as you said. Adm. Porter mentions disabling all the guns in Fort Hindman except for a single 6 pd Parrot on the land side of the fort. A diagram of Fort Hindman shows the position of the principal guns inside the fort itself.
