Danny, Your research on Alexander is accurate. I described Alexander and his role in bringing arms and ordnance stores into the TMD in "Entrepot: Government Imports into the Confederate States," published by Edinborough Press in November 2009. There was a concerted and fairly successful effort to bring in arms over the river during the summer of 1862. This continued after the fall of Vicksburg. There were a myriad of trans-shipments during this period by a variety of personnel, and they are all fascinating. One of the unsung heroes of the TMD war effort is Major Henry Springer, who brought over in excess of $1M worth of ordnance stores over the river in a succession of trips AFTER the fall of Vicksburg; a former member of the 3rd Louisiana, Springer's highly succesful operations lasted until the early Fall of 1864. These and other operations are detailed in the book.
