Many of my kin were wiped out by the Civil War.
Can you imagine forcing a woman with a houseful of fatherless kids off their property for non-payment of taxes?
That was what happened to Fielding Price's widow Polly after the war in White County. If I kept own you would probably
have tears in your eyes as they hit it so hard. The scarped the dirt and boiled it, if I remember right, so the salt could be
reclaimed from the bottom of the smoke house.
My Vaughn kin had owned the property at the Little Rock Airport prior to the war. Then Wm. R. Vaughn laid in an unmarked
grave at Mt. Holly until the 1990's. One of his descendant, a member of the UDC came back from Texas and had the grave marked
with a CSA marker from the U. S. Government. I never knew until the lady tracked me down and we had a dedication ceremony
that was truly moving.
Some of the Temple kin owned the property on the Arkansas River where the Wel-Spun factory is now located. Their son was
so in need of money after the fact, he worked on beating my ancestor, B. S. Temple, out of what money he had as well as his wife's dowrey. There was a big law suit over that filed in Lonoke County. This is true and can be documented.
One thing I have not noticed mentioned is the price the children of the veterans paid. My own grandfather started going to the
field to plow when he was 6 years old because his daddy had a "bad leg." My grandfather who was born in 1888
had little education and valued one greatly. That was probably the whole crew of his spent their lives striving for an education.
The list goes on and on.
