I'm now past 90 and still trying to learn. As a boy visiting with my grandfathers all of their convers ions were about the horrible day to day lives during the war and reconstruction. No talk about battles and such....just the fight to find enough to eat to survive each day. One ggrandfather was killed by bushwackers. His younger sister, who was eleven heard the shot, ran to him and held his head in he lap as he was dying. The bushwhackers returned and shot him twice more as she held him.
So as not to turn this into the first liar doesn't have a chance sort of thing I'll not tell the stories from the other side of my family. but I did want to mention that I lived and worked in the "north" during my working years. At our salemeetings they would usually play Dixie and all the southerners would stand and whoop and holler. Those from the north were nonplussed. They could never understand the passion of the southern men on this subject.
The homefront with all it's sorrow and tragedy has always been of interest to me. I wish I could have my grandparents back for a day. As a youngster I allowed too many opportunities to pass.
If all goes well, on May 5, I'll be on the HONOR flight to Washington D.C. to visit the WW2 monument. I'm glad we are a united nation. I wore the uniform with pride and I honor my ancestors and their endeavors, whatever their choice. I see no conflict in that.
