An excellent discussion. I often think about my kin and their pain. The family property in Wilson County Tennessee is gone. The registered owner died in 1862, either in combat, or from some unknown reason. The land was lost and now rest at the bottom of a corps of Engineers lake, I think with some family graves. The wife and children lived in Nashville for a while, but just disappeared after the war. Two Brothers who fought for Texas, most of the time in Tennessee ended up in Elkton, south of Nashville. I have been checking rosters to see if they went to the reunions at Franklin in the 1880s. One was a GGF who at times was rich, but died a pauper an lies in a lost or unmarked grave.

Another study, is gaining acceptance. Instead of 620,000 dead there is a blanket revision to 750,000. And this is not final. Some one before mentioned the kid in the field at 6 because of a crippled father. AS the loss figure rises, so does the disabled, and the displaced populations. The people of Atlanta and Richmond really lost out. The Lee family did get something for the land and site at Arlington, but nothing near its worth, and certainly nothing to Robert E. Lee. One of my kin in rural south Georgia, gave his land to his slaves rather than pay the taxes. I am not sure how the black families paid the taxes, but some still own the same land. My family did not recover until after WWII. We all went into the Army to recover from the depression. After we left, our father was able to recover from putting kids through college. A lot of our family in Florida tells the same story. All going back to the Civil War.
