McNutt Hill
In Response To: Re: Henderson Hill ()

is closer to Alexandria, on the west, or south, bank of Bayou Rapides. There is a Baptist church on it today, a black top road dead ends at the church. Actually, according to the US Geological survey maps, McNutt Hill is a broad, half mile wide plateau that rises up from the valley along Hwy 121, but that portion where Bee would have placed his guns, is located near that church. It isn't obvious, from the hill, that it would be a tactical position, because of the timber blocking your view, but from the road along Bayou Rapides, where Banks' army would have passed, McNutt rises from the flat prairie rather abruptly, a half mile from the road. Artillery placed there would command that road.

McNutt also had a road to Carroll Jones' passing over it and, in 1864, intersected the Stage Road that came from Henderson Hill. Carroll Jones was one of the many free blacks that were loyal to the Confederate cause. He ran a trading post and also cooperated with Taylor storing supplies there. It was located at the present site of the community of Mora.

Taylor had wanted Bee to retreat, if retreat became necessary, from Monette's to McNutt and place his guns there. Unfortunately, even if he had, Bee had lost 4 of his 6 guns during the hasty withdrawal from Monette's. Yank cavalry, spying Bee's pullout, dashed up the heights and captured the 4 guns, after they were left to fend for themselves.
