My wife's distant cousin, Howard Shaw, wrote the history of the Shaw clan, and in it he gives an extensive narrative on the history of Bayou Rapides. His chapter on the Civil War includes an account of Henderson Hill, this apparently from oral history. Says a Confederate deserter and a Jayhawker served as guides for Mower. After the brief fight at the bridge over the bayou, Yank scouts followed Vincent's men as they retired to camp on Henderson. They reported back and the locals told Mower they knew the hill very well and how to circle around it.
There are some errors, that I know of, in this history, but the account of Henderson Hill sounds plausible enough.
