The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Re: How to find my Great Grandfather?

Thank you. I have the 3 Fold records and he enlisted in Yazoo and it appears he lived in Loundes County Crawfordsville. I have three Taylor families and in the Census for 1860 which I had not been able to find until now US Census they have him there and call his new wife Mrs. Taylor. That is why I am sure I could not find her. I'm just perplexed at the children having to grow up in the New Orleans orphanage. I think my whole life I wanted answers as to why my Grandfather William Sidney was left there at the age of 3 until at least he was 11 since he is there in the 1880 census with his sister Helen. Maybe deep inside I'm afraid to know more about this Taylor family. The Civil War records did really help out. No matter where he lived I will never get past how they could have been left there. I know my Mom went through the same thing. My husband has pointed out these were hard times. After the war, no money, big families. In the end he got to Nebraska and helped out on the farm of his Uncle James and he put him through school in Illinois my Grandfather that is and right after my Mom and her younger brother were born the 7th and 8th children his wife died and this man William S. raised those children all by himself. He never let them be apart and he lived to be 80 years old. All of my Grandparents died before I was born. I feel like I know them better now except for Sidney Ira. I'm sure he did his best but why Louisiana? He was born in Mississippi, he fought for Mississippi in the Civil War. I've looked at Taylors in LA and since he died in Shreveport it seems like the most likely place. I did notice in the census in Crawfordsville next house from Sidney and Helen was a Taylor family and they had a son who was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. Wondering if since some of the children were born in Mississippi if I might learn something from a Baptismal certificate. You never know. Thanks again. Clarissa
