General Gordon has always been one of my favorite generals. His insight into the causes and conduct of the war should be studied by more people today. It is a sign of his own modesty that he does not mention Antietam, where he was wounded five times before leaving the field, nor the wilderness campaign, where he very nearly turned Grant's flank.
