The Lincoln regime may have got what it wanted, but the South's actions played right into the Republican's hands.
Lincoln was a Lawyer, and good Lawyers know how to play their cases (and Juries) to win in court. The South seceding to keep the institute of slavery was a no win situation. Lincoln could play the good guy, while the South's image would not look good to the world, no matter how Constitutional the realm of slavery was, or how many slaves were in the North.
Might made right, no matter how wrong it was used, it is hoped that we ALL could learn from that, though history has proved that wrong.
It’s like trying to fight against the craze of “Global Warming” everyone has jumped on that bandwagon, and anyone fighting AGAINST that “cause” is going to look bad, no matter what they do.
