The irony is that many of the "Founding Fathers" of the USA whose "notions" of morality synthesized into Civil Rights (and 21st century Human Rights), and yet many were slaveholders or indentured servant holders. They saw no hypocrisy in this because that was the 18th century paradigm.
A thousand years from now, Civil Rights/Human Rights may be a long forgotten social experiment that would be totally absurd to those of the 31st century. Morality, rights, and other forms of social order are artificial constructs of man and ever changing. We must view history in the context of it's time.
