I believe the answer to your question was the moment Booth shot him. It wouldn't have been PC to dis a dead or dying Prez. That made him a martyr. As we have seen in the following years, others became larger than life after death. It was many years after JFK was shot that anyone would say anything to bring attention to the harm he may have caused.
