The unique aspect of slavery in America compared to the rest of the world was children born to slave parents were born slaves themselves. It didn't always work that way in the rest of the world. Virginia actually fought the slavery issue when our nation first formed. Most Americans realized the evils of slavery however it wasn't something that could be stopped overnight. We still deal with the results of the millions of uneducated and unskilled people that were "freed" in the 1860's only to reproduce in record numbers and not keep up with the standards of society. We continue to lower the bar to accomodate such individuals to the point that you can step OVER the bar today.
