Linda, Guess what?Two of my GGUncles,one 14yrs., were in the 127IL.Which mustered at Camp Douglas in Sept.and had gaurd duty there for much of the fall of 1862.While it was a prison camp,it was a training facility/muster location early on and conditions at the time of the arrival of Ft.'s Henry and Donelson,the first large influx of prisoners experienced by federals,were not all as bad as you described above.There were shortages and inexperience.Did you know captured officers were allowed to walk to town freely and without guard for supplies in many instances? I don't doubt and what you say is true it was just latter on in the war after the breakdown of the Dix-Hill Cartel and orders given by Federal Sec. of State to retaliate.Federals were wrong in much of their behavior concerning captives.At this point it wasn't quite as intensional.(there are always exceptions)There was an outbreak of Small Pox amoung several prison populations having to do with Ft's Henry and Donelson.There were "survivors" of the desease.This prisoners records should bring out his condition.Winter would of been the worst.Luckily this man didn't have to go through that.I could be in state of denial but,My family were god fairing and I have records from other instances that they were of good moral character.There is good and bad in all people and unfortunately,war brings out both.Take Care.
