The War Department "copyists" who transcribed the documents that resulted in the Compiled Service Records, were instructed to copy the document EXACTLY as presented, even when common sense told the copyist that the document contained errors. They were instructed to exercise personal judgment only when trying to decipher unclear penmanship. That's actually a good thing, in my opinion, in that it removes some anonymous clerk's guess-work from the equation, and allows modern researchers to work as if they were actually holding the original document in their hands -- errors and all.
