In pulling my notes for the Staunton Depot, most of which are courtesy of the late Howard Madaus, the white borders for the Staunton Depot ANV style flags are not wool bunting but wool flannel (challis) as Tom has mentioned. The drawings I have for WD 249 and 252, the stars are also about 8 inches in separation whereas the Brunk flag measured out to 9 inches, which is correct for the 5th Bunting.

Well - while writing this my friend that saw the flag last Monday and examined it in detail just called and confirms to me that the white borders are indeed wool flannel so this is another rare example of the Staunton Depot flag.

As has been said, while the cantons of the Staunton Depot Second Nationals their white fields are wool flannel as well. So this depot must have had access to white wool flannel instead of white wool bunting.

Madaus believed that the ANV style Staunton Depot flags were made in September/October 1864. The two WD flags above were taken at Waynesboro in 1865.

So we do indeed have another example of the rare Staunton Depot flags. Well done everyone.
