Re: Cedar Mountain Union flags captured

Hello,

With reference to the flags of the 28th NY which were lost at Cedar Mountain. I put together the article to which you linked on the website of the 28th NY reenacting group. There is definitely some confusion regarding how many flags from the 28th were captured at that battle (I'm still trying to patch it together myself). That article was written in 2007 and I have found a lot of additional information since that time.

When the regiment was mustered into service in May 1861, they were presented with two flags, both of which appear to have been a national flag design. One was the national flag reproduced and pictured in the article which you linked to, but the other was used as a regimental flag (based on the history of the regiment from 1896) and had the regiments engagements marked upon it. Both of these flags are currently housed at the Niagara County Historical Society in Lockport, NY.

However, at Thanksgiving 1861, the regiment was presented with two new flags which were made by the ladies of Batavia, NY. It was these two flags which were carried into battle and captured at Cedar Mountain.

The flag which was returned to the 28th NY by the 5th Va in 1883 was the national flag (pictured in black and white in the article to which you linked with the inverted great star pattern)

However, the whereabouts of the regimental flag of the 28th NY which was captured at Cedar Mountain is unknown and I do not believe it has been seen since 1862 at Cedar Mountain. Albany has reported that they do not have it and it's not at Lockport.

We found a description of this flag in a letter from a man who served in the 28th NY describing it as being a blue background flag with the NYS crest on one side and had an inverted great star pattern of 31 stars surrounded by a gold eagle and ribbon reading "Presented by the Ladies of Batavia" on the other side.

Thanks for linking to the article by the way; however, I apologies for it being out of date.

Thanks,
Simon Taylor
