On page 245, in Krick's book (Cedar Mountain), Colonel Edwin F. Brown in 1883 said "You captured (our) flag."
The Regimental color bearer was wounded in both legs. He tucked the flag under his jacket, but a Confederate saw it and took it. That was the flag that a piece was cut out, later to identify it.
I have no information about the 28th New York's, National Flag.
Private Narcissus Finch Quarles of Company E, 5th Virginia, captured all three flags.
The 5th Connecticut lost their National Flag. The "State Flag" was saved by the 7th Ohio Infantry. The flag was then given to BG.Crawford.
Maybe the flag was a guidon? Unknown?
Its tough finding them, but I have found hundreds and I sure there are hundreds more out there.
