Switzerland is an armed society, not a military society. I know some will say "what's the difference?"
The difference it attitude. Switzerland requires military service from all its ablebodied males. But as far as I know service by the females is not.
Most of the military are in the reserves like our National Guards. But unlike our National Guard the Swiss carry their G-3 Assualt Rifles, and machine guns home with them and keep them in their closets. It is even legal for them to walk down the streets carrying them openly, or so I've heard. It makes every man a policeman. But that is not a police state, nor a military state.
