BTW, John, while you are correct in your political analysis of the British of those days, the term "tory" was used almost universally to refer to american born loyalists, in a derogatory sense.
Incidentally, Benjamin FRanklin's son was a loyalist. He moved to England; he and his father never saw or spoke after the war, that I know of.
