Re: WBTS
In Response To: Re: WBTS ()

The previous poster was talking about the devastation they suffered, not losing. I was simply trying to make the point that the far worse devastation wreaked in King Philip’s War seems to have been all but forgotten by the inhabitants of the area in which it played out. Yes, it was still on people’s radar as late as the 19th century, but has since vanished from the national consciousness. The fact that it happened 330 years ago probably has a lot to do with it. But I wonder if people will still be as fired up about the WBTS as some on this board are, almost 200 years from now.

Deaths per 100K population were for King P’s War: 1,538 (English), 15,000 (Indians). For the Civil War: 857 and for WWII: 206. Thus the “American” deaths in King P’s War were double that of the WBTS and about 7x compared to World War 2. (Source: E.B. Schultz and M.J. Tougias’ “King Philip’s War.”)

But I think that, in the case of the Confederacy, it’s not so much the devastation that can’t be gotten beyond or let go of, but the fact that all the blood that was spent on a gamble that had very little chance of succeeding from the start, is the crux of the issue and why some people on the side that did not prevail will never be able to let that go.

From the Union standpoint, “never has so much valor been wasted on such a poor cause,” or words to that effect. From the Southern standpoint, I believe Jefferson Davis himself commented, when it was over, on the impracticality of secession.
