Let's just say that during those troubled days certain liberalities enjoyed during more peaceful times were put on hold. If it makes you happy, the Northern US may not have been a "democratic republic" in some, perhaps many, areas. But it surely was more so than its opponent as concerns a large percentage of its population. Wouldn't you agree?
