Here is a curious piece of history that I ran across reading an account of the 1st Day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
During one of the more intense actions of the day a Confederate Officer struggled with a Union Regimental Colors Bearing. This Officer captured the Regiment Color but was mortally wounded in the process.
This Officers dieing words were "send these colors to President Davis".
When Jeff Davis was captured in Georgia in 1865 these Colors were found in Davis' baggage.
What Union Regiment did those colors belong to?
